In his remarks on spiritual healing, in the course of his inaugural sermon, the vicar of All Saints' made a slight reference to Christian Science which renders it desirable that some statement be made as to its teachings.

Christian Science is based upon an understanding of God so radical that it relies upon Him alone for healing. God works through means, as the vicar says, but Christian Scientists understand God's means for healing to be His own power and not materia medica. From the fact that Jesus did not make use of medicine, diet, and the like, or instruct his followers to use them, it is inferred they are not God's means for healing. On the contrary, Jesus' own statement, "Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do," and "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also, as well as many other statements to the same effect, imply that healing should be by spiritual means alone.

Thus Christian Science is founded upon both the precept and the example of Jesus. It is not merely "called Christian Science," it is actually the Science of Christianity, or the knowledge of the law of God in its application to human affairs and conditions.
