In November, 1908, a Christian Scientist and her husband came to live with us. She was the first Christian Scientist I had known, and I was so impressed with her kind ways and gentle character that I knew then she had found the true Christianity for which I had been longing for years, as the teaching of the church in which I was raised did not satisfy me. Shortly afterward I was taken down with what the doctors diagnosed as a complication of nervousness, rheumatism, and a light attack of the gout, which settled in my feet so that I could not walk, and it was very painful for me even to stand. This lady explained Christian Science to me and said that it would heal me, so I thought I would try it. I had been sick off and on all of my life, supposedly as a result of having erysipelas when I was only six months old.

Although the healing was slow, I am truly grateful for this, as it impelled me to study earnestly to learn the truth for myself. It was about six months before I was healed of the rheumatism, but inside of three months I was healed of a double hernia, for which a support had been worn for over five years. I had contemplated undergoing an operation for this trouble, but the doctors did not give me much encouragement that it would be successful or of any benefit. I have been healed of Bright's disease in its early stage, of catarrh of the head and throat, of stomach disorder, with which I had been troubled most of my life, and of the liquor and tobacco habit. I have also been healed of deformed feet, the toes being drawn up in a cramped position.

As a result of the constant study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and of trying each day to live the life that we should live, doing unto others as we would have them do unto us, I have been freed from all this physical bondage. I am most grateful, however, for the overcoming of hateful temper and a disagreeable disposition which had gotten me into many difficulties and kept me out of employment most of the time, because I could not get along with anybody for very long. I have been able to solve almost every problem that has come to me, although as yet I have only started on the journey from sense to Soul.
