The citations of Scripture given by a critic to repudiate...

The citations of Scripture given by a critic to repudiate the statements of a lecturer on Christian Science relative to the unreality of disease, do not belong to nor can they be associated with the Biblical account of creation contained in the first chapter of Genesis. This record of Holy Writ declares that "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good;" also, that He made man in His own image and likeness. John says, "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." No sense of discord or ills of the flesh find an abiding-place in this infinite kingdom of Spirit.

If it be true, as the critic would have the public believe, that God is the author of and sends disease upon man, disease would be eternal, hence indestructible. It was to save from this erroneous belief, namely, that sin and disease were real, that God created them or permitted them to exist, and man was subject to and could be afflicted with them, that Christ Jesus came into the world. The ministry of the Master was one of healing, and he knew no incurable diseases. It is hardly possible that any one professing to be a Christian will say that Jesus did not fully and scientifically understand what he was talking about when he said: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

Christian Science has no quarrel with doctors or with those who wish medical attention; yet the fact remains that the way of the Christ is the one true way of salvation from every human discord, and the teachings of Christian Science offer a demonstrable understanding of his way.
