Human language never seems more inadequate to me than...

Human language never seems more inadequate to me than when I endeavor to express my gratitude for Christian Science and for the work accomplished by its Discoverer, Mrs. Eddy. About two and a half years ago, when I first heard of this wonderful teaching, I had reached the point where I took my suffering for granted and had ceased to expect to receive help. My interest in Christian Science was aroused by a dear relative of mine, because I was seeking after a more satisfying religion. That my expectations were far surpassed will appear more clearly from the following brief account of my sufferings and subsequent healing.

Sixteen years ago I was taken ill with appendicitis, and lay with ice on my stomach day and night for many weeks. How much I would have been spared had I known then of the power of Truth! Finally peritonitis set in, and when I recovered after many weeks, I had to learn to walk again. I was not fully restored to health, however, until comparatively recently. At first I suffered pain only when working, but as time went on the suffering became constant, and mental depression, sleeplessness, and an ever increasing convulsive cough were added, until seven years ago my condition grew almost unbearable. I was treated by many physicians, but in all cases without benefit. Then a professor advised an operation, as he assumed that all my sufferings were due to appendicitis. After an extensive operation the pain disappeared, and I was hopeful that in time I would regain my normal strength and ability to work; but ten months later the old pain returned with great severity, and with it all the other symptoms, at first only occasionally but later regularly every second or third week, despite the conscientious efforts of the physicians.

I had submitted to what I believed to be an unalterable fate, when through divine Love I was led to the fountain of Truth. I was freed of a great weight when I began to understand Mrs. Eddy's explanation of the Bible. I also realized that sleeplessness, nervousness, and the convulsive cough had vanished, and I at once perceived that Christian Science offered the means for my complete recovery. I immediately started to study the subject zealously, but the pain in the abdomen seemed to increase, and in the autumn of 1913 became so intense that I could hardly move. A physician was called, despite my earnest protests, and he declared that an operation must be performed at once, as he suspected an abscess in the region of the appendix. A delay of one or two days and the operation might be too late, he said; but I emphatically refused to be operated upon.
