The Lectures
A lecture on Christian Science was delivered by Jacob S. Shield at the Empire Theater, and Judge J. W. Norvell made the following introductory remarks:—
Less than fifty years ago Christian Science was discovered by Mrs. Eddy, one of the noblest and purest women that ever lived. She devoted her life to making plain the way, that all who will may partake of the "water of life freely." She was to a remarkable degree possessed of pure wisdom, and to her was revealed the spiritual meaning of the Scriptures. Her discovery and practice of Christian Science was but the demonstration of the teachings of the New Testament, and through "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she has made available to all mankind the truth as taught and explained by Jesus of Nazareth. Christian Science has brought to suffering and sinning humanity that great spiritual law which the Master had in mind when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
This new-old religion has also brought rest to the weary and comfort to the sorrowing. Many thousands of persons who were suffering from all manner of disease and sin have thereby been made free, and they have proven that the prayer of faith does heal the sick and give peace to the troubled heart, that it does make men and women better and happier and shows them how to love God with their whole heart and mind and their neighbor as themselves. Christian Science has changed a religion of gloom and fear to the pure light of hope and joy, and hundreds of thousands of people all over the world have been elevated from the dark valley of despair to the mountain top of a sublime faith in God.
