A sense of deep gratitude prompts me to tell of the blessings...
A sense of deep gratitude prompts me to tell of the blessings I have received through Christian Science. Some time ago, when spending a holiday at a seaside resort, a motorcar knocked me down and badly injured one of my legs. I was taken to the local hospital, and the doctors there described the injury as a "double compound fracture," and strongly urged me to have the leg amputated. I refused assent, however, as the slight knowledge I had of Christian Science gave me an assurance that God, the great Physician, could heal me, and I resolved to put my trust in Him. Eventually I was discharged from the hospital as healed, but I was lame. Shortly after my return home, my mother, who was very much concerned about my lameness, called in a specialist, who after an examination declared that the injured leg was three inches shorter than the other and that I would be a cripple for life. He said that nothing more could be done for me and that I would have to wear a thickened boot.
I had been studying Christian Science with my married sister at her home, and as this sister had received many blessings under the care of a Christian Science practitioner, I humbly resolved to trust in God to restore me to a normal condition, comforted with our dear Leader's assurance that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). My healing came a few weeks later, when I was visiting this sister. The practitioner called in the evening, and he made everything so plain that I felt a great uplift. After he had gone I realized that the lameness had vanished and I could walk as perfectly as before the accident, the injured leg having resumed its normal length. Before I went to visit my sister, my mother had ordered a pair of surgical boots, in accordance with the advice of the specialist, and on my return home the bootmaker called with them. When told they were not needed, he was so astonished that he asked permission to measure me again, and he then found that both legs were exactly alike in length.
I desire to express my thankfulness for this proof of God's love, and also for the light our dear Leader has given to us through her priceless books, especially Science and Health, and the help I am constantly receiving from the Christian Science literature.
