The evangelist who preached in your city ignored the remarkable benefit that Christian Science has been to the world in reinstating primitive spiritual healing and the understanding of "the deep things of God" which the study of Science and Health in connection with the Bible makes available for the student. The successful mission of Christian Science made no appeal to him. He attempted to discredit Christian Science by perverting its teachings and by giving distorted definitions of incomplete sentences and passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. The effect of Christian Science teaching is not to discard the Bible, as the critic declared. On the contrary, Christian Scientists declare that the Bible, as a result of the light thrown on its sacred pages by Christian Science, has become a new book. Its teachings are understood; apparent contradictions and discrepancies are cleared up ; above all else, its truths are rendered available in healing sickness and destroying all forms of evil.

Christian Scientists do not worship Mrs. Eddy, as this critic declared. They are profoundly grateful to her for her labors of love in giving again to the world the spiritual import of the Scriptures, which heals and saves. They however worship God only, in accordance with the first commandment. The evangelist attempted to make God the creator of matter by quoting the second, or false, account of creation in Genesis, instead of the first, which tells of the true or spiritual creation. Modern physicists are more and more approaching the position of Christian Science,—that matter is merely a manifestation of mortal human belief, and not an expression of reality or a creation of the infinite Mind. Christian Science does not deny that sin, sickness, and death exist to human thought, but it denies that God created these evils, and it further teaches that a right understanding of God will destroy them, even as Jesus and his disciples destroyed them through divine power.

Christian Science does not deny the doctrines of atonement and regeneration. Doubtless its teachings differ on these subjects from the conceptions of this evangelist; but this does not necessity prove the falsity of the teachings of Christian Science.
