Christian Science is not the invention of any person; the very words "Christian" and "science" are older than modern language. Science means, very simply, knowledge, and in its highest sense it means spiritual knowledge. Jesus the Christ had knowledge, scientific knowledge, of the truth, and his ultimate promise is that we shall know the truth, and the truth shall make us free.

The reported statement of our critic that the sick should call the elders of the church and be anointed with oil, and have prayers uttered for them, but that if these were insufficient they should then call the doctor, is interesting in its unconscious revelation of a much greater faith in the doctor and his drugs than in the directions of Scripture. And the mixture of blind faith in the words of the Scripture with blind faith in the doctor shows that in neither is to be found that knowledge of the truth of which blind faith is the opposite. Mrs. Eddy has stated the matter very simply on page 83 of Science and Health in the sentence, "Nothing is more antagonistic to Christian Science than a blind belief without understanding, for such a belief hides Truth and builds on error."

Christian agree that God is omnipotent. This means that He is the only power, not that He is one, the greatest, of many powers. Therefore the Scriptures counsel resorting to God in all matters, including the healing of sickness. As stated in Romans, "There is no power but of God." God is Spirit; God is Love; and neither was ever found in matter, which is not the counterpart or likeness, but the counterfeit and opposite, of God. Therefore blind faith in material remedies is idolatry. The moment this is clearly seen by any one he comes nearer to an abiding knowledge of the Christ. Mrs. Eddy pointed out this fact with great clearness, and Christian Scientists would be ingrates indeed if they were not honest enough to acknowledge it, or loving enough to be grateful for it.
