In June, 1912, I stumbled and fell down the stairs from the attic. While falling I unfortunately allowed the thought to flash through my mind that I was going to lose the use of my foot. Upon recovering from a short period of unconsciousness, I felt a severe pain in the left foot, but as I at once began to realize that there is no sensation in matter, the pain subsided in a comparatively short time, and I was able to go down the next two flights and attend to my household duties. In the afternoon the pain set in again, and in the evening both the foot and leg were very much swollen, so that walking became impossible. Late in the evening I telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment and experienced its beneficent effect, for the fever and pain yielded and I was able to rest.
This was on a Saturday, and the condition remained about the same until the following Wednesday. My relatives, while showing great loving-kindness, allowed fear to enter their thought. They said that this was a case which necessitated surgical help, and that after the foot had been properly attended to it might heal quickly under Science treatment. The practitioner faithfully helped me to overcome this sense of fear, and from then on the healing progressed rapidly. In two weeks I was able to use my foot quite normally. I consider this a glorious proof of God's omnipotence and of the possibility of overcoming errors of all kinds, for they return into their native nothingness if we but overcome our sense of fear and our false beliefs, as in the foregoing instance of the supposed necessity for a surgical operation.
Great is my thankfulness to God, whose ever present love surrounds us. But I also feel that I owe a debt of gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, who has made these blessings available to mankind; and I am thankful to all who lovingly and faithfully help me to walk in the path of Christian Science.
