Six years ago Christian Science was first revealed to me, at a time when, as we read in the Scriptures, I had gone down to the very "gates of death." I called upon God and He heard my cries, and delivered me "from my destructions." For a year or more I had wrestled with a mental problem which it seemed impossible to solve, and many times I prayed earnestly to the God in whom I had trusted for fifteen years to direct my path and keep my feet in the way I should go; but circumstances only grew worse, until I could stand the strain no longer, and one day I collapsed both physically and mentally.

The physician who was called diagnosed the case as acute appendicitis combined with nervous prostration in its worst form, and only those who have gone through a similar struggle can know what the condition was. I remained under his treatment six weeks without relief; indeed, I gradually grew weaker, until my mentality seemed to give way completely. It was while in this serious state that I called to God to save me and asked for help in Christian Science, although I knew absolutely nothing of it and knew little of what I was saying. The family and loved ones about me were filled with fear, but they did as I asked and called a practitioner, who came to me and began treatment. My sister, who was in the room at the time, says that in less than half an hour I was resting comfortably. I went to sleep and slept all night, the first time for six weeks that I had been able to do so without an opiate. In the morning I realized a great change had taken place in my consciousness, for the peace that "passeth all understanding" seemed to be present with me.

The complete healing was slow, nearly six months elapsing before I was entirely free from the great fear characteristic of this nervous trouble. There was, however, much to be overcome in that time, and the slow healing led me to be more faithful in the study of Science and Health. When I look back and see the way in which my problem was solved in Christian Science, I thank God for His goodness, and am indeed grateful to our Leader for bringing again to the world's remembrance the truth which makes free. I realize that without this help I would never have lived to testify to this healing today.
