[Written for the Sentinel]

True Freedom

Know you the song of the captive bird
Finding itself set free,
Soaring aloft into freedom glad,
Singing in ecstasy?

Know you the smile of the waking earth
Greeting the morning light,
Calling the world to a glad sweet day
After the long dark night?

Know you the fragrance of flowers sweet
After the summer rain?
Know you the joy of a heart at peace,
Freed from all sin and pain?

What freedom means to the captive bird,
The shower to leaf and tree,
What sunlight means after darkness drear,
The truth now means to me.
