The Progressive Thinker
Mrs. Eddy does not claim to have originated anything in giving Christian Science to the world, but only to have discovered the Principle and rule on which the healing work of Christ Jesus and the early Christians was based. Through this discovery and its practical application to the needs of humanity, she has reestablished primitive Christianity, and founded thereon a great movement which has extended to every part of the civilized world. This is all that Mrs. Eddy's friends have credited her with doing, and no amount of unfriendly criticism will serve to deprive her of the credit and gratitude to which she is entitled for this great work.
The critic argues for the reality and usefulness of pain, which he says is a "beneficial manifestation of intelligent goodness." If by intelligent goodness he means God, his process of reasoning is about like saying that God created man subject to inevitable suffering and death and gave him pain as a sort of danger signal to warn him of his impending and unavoidable doom. Christian Science has freed hundreds of thousands from the fallacy of believing that a good cause can result in an evil effect, and has shown them that God, who is all good and always good, could not and did not create evil or anything capable of directly or indirectly causing pain or suffering.
