[Rev. J. W. Kramer as reported in Los Angeles (Cal.) Examiner]

He who preaches that God sends sickness is a poor comforter. Many say, "It is God's will," when it is the devil's will. Many complain of God visiting them with evil, troubles, and other afflictions, when these things are often the result of carelessness, extravagance, or bad judgment.

Does God take the stout husband and leave the sickly wife with little children to struggle with the pinches of poverty? Does He let the cyclone blow down the church on one corner and leave the saloon standing on the other? A man under the influence of liquor falls in front of a train, or kills his wife—was it God's will? What glory could God get out of that? If I believed that God spread scarlet fever among little children, that God made idiots or lunatics or cripples for life, I would hate Him. "God is love." If God is responsible for all the sorrows of earth, who would care for His consolations?
