Supply and Its Source

No false mortal concept has been attended by more appalling disasters than has the wrong sense of supply. To believe that material possessions or a human business is the source of man's supply, has always brought the believer worry and fear and heavy burdens. Through human experience for ages, the pathway of this false concept of supply has been strewn with wrecked homes and lost happiness. The world has said that these sad results were caused by business worries and financial losses, but these were only the effects of the belief that supply is material and can be lost. The race has long groaned under the bondage of this destructive thought-influence at work in human consciousness, and there is an unspeakable need of help to lift humanity out of its awful grasp.

For thousands of years the Bible has been proclaiming the truth about supply, and that the remedy for all our fears is ever at hand; but it was not until Mrs. Eddy made known the Principle and rule by which the availability of this supply may be demonstrated, that men in our own day were able to find escape from their lifetime enslavement. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 307) she says, "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies."

To one who had a small understanding of Christian Science, much of the help and quiet assurance that lay hidden in these words was lost. To say that God gives "spiritual ideas," and they in turn bring daily supply, when there was need of fire and food and clothes, seemed rather cold comfort to this unillumined thought. It seemed very much like saying, "Be warmed and fed and clothed," when there was nothing in sight with which to provide these things. "Spiritual ideas" seemed so intangible and inadequate to meet practical, every-day needs. Groping about in mental darkness and seeking for more light, the meaning of these words at last dawned on the seeker's thought, and ever since they have brought her a practical helpfulness all their own.
