If any one has reason to be thankful to God for Christian Science,...
If any one has reason to be thankful to God for Christian Science, surely it is I. About eleven years ago I was overcome by the heat, and after that time and until I was healed in Christian Science, I was in misery during the summer months. About July 1 of every year I was compelled to go North, and could not return until the weather was cool, which was usually about Sept. 10. This meant not only neglect of my business and the loss of two months' salary, but my family and I were in constant fear of another acute attack and its probably fatal outcome.
During the hot weather, my skin, instead of being moist, was hot and dry; I felt as if I were being consumed by fire, and was relieved only by frequent cold baths and the application of ice to my head. Besides this I found it very difficult to breathe. Some of my relatives besought me to try Christian Science, as they had been benefited by it. I resisted vigorously, but was finally persuaded to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I could not, however, understand much of it, although it had the effect of somewhat changing my attitude toward this teaching.
In July, 1911, having suffered from a two weeks' spell of hot weather, I felt that I could not possibly undertake the journey on the appointed day, as I was completely exhausted and ready to give up. In my despair I requested my wife to call for help in Christian Science. The faithful practitioner came promptly, although I did not deserve any kindness on his part, as I had treated him rather rudely on two different occasions. I told him that I did not believe in Christian Science, but would try it, inasmuch as I knew nothing else could help me. I also explained to him that I did not understand how I could be helped by this religion, as I had always been an infidel. He, however, encourged me, and told me I could not be expected to believe in something that I knew but very little about, and he then proceeded to give me treatment.
