Several years ago I was attacked by an illness which developed into acute lung trouble, and I was under a doctor's care for two months. He visited me twice daily. When I was able to get out of bed I was taken to Bloomington, my home at that time. The physician told my husband it would be dangerous to move me, but later he said I had better be taken to Arizona or New Mexico, as I could not live in this climate through another winter. I was also suffering from nervousness and bowel disorder. My husband took me home May 15, 1900.

The following day a dear friend came in to see me and told me Christian Science and what it had done for her, saying that I also could get help. She asked me to read the Journal she had brought me and to go to the Wednesday evening testimony meeting. I was not the able to stand on my feet long enough to dress. I read the Journal through, and by Wednesday evening was able to dress and be taken in a carriage to the church. After hearing the many testimonies of healing, I slept throughout the night, for the first time in months. The following day I called a Christian Science practitioner and commenced treatment. I laid aside my glasses, which I had worn for five years, and have had no need of the since. After eleven treatments the practitioner told me she thought I had sufficient understanding to work for myself. Though my struggles were many and my physical healing slow, I am thankful I never thought of turning to mortal mind for help. Mrs. Eddy says, "Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept" (Science and Health, p. 454).

In all these years we have not used any material remedies or turned to mortal mind for help, with one exception. A few years ago our four year old daughter, while waiting for a piece of ice, was struck with a three hundred pound cake, which slipped from the tongs of the iceman, seriously injuring her right leg and apparently breaking every bone in the left foot, besides lacerating the flesh of the foot badly. I was in the house at the time and heard and older daughter cry out for me. My first thought was that Mind is ever present and controls His idea, and that there was nothing for me to fear. With his sweet assurance I walked out and took my child from the arms of the iceman and carried her on to the porch. With so many around me voicing error I was not able to work alone, so I called for a Christian Science practitioner, and then for a physician to set the bones.
