It is with an overflowing sense of gratitude that I send my testimony, with the desire to help others to realize the good of Christian Science. I want to let all know the blessing it has been to me. I see clearly that all my bringing up was in the wrong belief, for now at an advanced age my eyes are being opened to the truth. I am a Crimean veteran with two medals, a Crimean medal and a Turkish medal, while my age is eighty-seven.
I know that God is not the author of sickness and trouble, and I cannot express my gratitude and delight in knowing this in a practical way. It was about a year ago that a lady called on my daughter and helped her in Christian Science. She also lent me some Sentinels, which I enjoyed greatly, and I asked her to get me the loan of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the book that was mentioned so often in the Sentinel. She did so, and I enjoyed it so much that I felt I must have one of my own to keep. The lady got me one, and since then I have read very little else than the Bible and Science and Health, and everything has been most helpfully opened up. I can now read the Bible with a greater understanding and joy than ever before.
Just before Christmas, 1912, I was taken ill, and a doctor was called in. He said I had bronchitis, and that it was very serious at my age. He gave me medicine, and I took a little, but then felt that I could not take any more, that I must rely on God alone. I knew that He is the only healer. The same Christian Science friend came to see me and we had many talks. I could only say that Christian Science was lovely. My granddaughter and grandson also came and had Science talks with me. I was at first afraid to take my food, and my breath was very troublesome, but the lady told me I could eat what I liked, and I did so and enjoyed it. She asked another practitioner to come, and I then realized the help and gradually got better. The doctor called a few times and could not understand why I had improved so quickly. He said I must have a good constitution, but I knew that it was Christian Science which had helped me. I soon got quite well, in fact better than I was before the illness, as I had always suffered with short breathing; but now I have no trouble whatever, and can take my daily walk and enjoy it. My sight was getting poor and I was thinking about getting stronger glasses, but now I can see much better than before and sometimes can read without glasses.
