In May, 1892, so wonderful and beautiful was the revelation...
In May, 1892, so wonderful and beautiful was the revelation of Christian Science to me that I could never find words adequate to express it. For ten years I had studied the Bible prayerfully, with deeply earnest longing for an understanding of the Scriptures, and often wondered why the loving Father did not hear or answer my prayers. I was a professing Christian, but not at all satisfied, because I could not say that I knew I was a Christian, as I often heard others say they knew they were. It was while traveling in California with my husband, who was seeking health, every other means for relief having failed, that Christian Science found us. In conversation with a Christian Scientist, the first one we had ever met, among other statements which she made was this: "Do you not think we have today the same Christ principle that Jesus had?" Immediately our thought was illumined with the light of Truth, my husband's face beaming with brightness, while only a moment before it was dark with despair. Then I could say with joy that I knew myself to be a child of God, because of the peace, rest, and calm that came to me, all of which nothing but Christ, Truth, can give.
While reading Science and Health, my husband was healed of severe illness supposed to have been caused by overwork. He was also afflicted with a stomach trouble, and mental depression bordering on despair. After dieting a long time, he was finally reduced to the verge of starvation; but with the help of a Christian Science practitioner for about six weeks, he was healed, and began to eat anything he wished, and has remained well ever since. He is now in better health than ever before, weighs more, and does better work as an accountant than he ever did.
I have witnessed the healing of many physical diseases said to be malignant and contagious, as well as seen the appetite for alcohol and tobacco destroyed. I myself have been healed of severe headaches. While my experience is beautiful, the path has not been one of flowers. I have learned in a measure the meaning of these lines of our Leader (Message for 1902, p. 19): "Are earth's pleasures, its ties and its treasures, taken away from you? It is divine Love that doeth it, and sayeth, 'Ye have need of all these things.' A danger besets thy path?—a spiritual behest, in reversion, awaits you."
