In a recent issue your correspondent, the Rev. A. J. Waldron, in commenting on the latest move of the medical profession to introduce hypnotism or suggestion as a curative method in place of the now thoroughly defunct belief in drugs, couples Christian Science with "New Thought" and what he describes as the "power of faith." Will you permit me to state that Christian Science has little or nothing in common with what is popularly known as faith-healing, nor has it anything in common with suggestion of any kind. These systems are one and all based on the action of material sense, and are simply a fresh attempt of this sense to make mankind believe in the presence and power of something besides the divine Mind. Materia medica knows that the days of drugs are numbered, and suggestion is its latest departure from its old methods; but both the belief in drugs and the belief in suggestion are simply different phases of the same carnal mind, and cannot save mankind either from sickness or from sin.

Christian Science teaches clearly the omnipresence and omnipotence of that one Mind which is infinite good, and utilizes the understanding of that Mind to destroy the suppositional effects of the carnal mind, called sin, disease, and death. All other systems hope to destroy these effects through a mental process of the carnal mind, which is, of course, a house divided against itself. The Christian Scientist no more uses his mind in healing his patient than the mathematician uses his mind when he declared that two plus two equals four to destroy the belief that two plus two equals five. He simply states the truth, and this truth, and not the action of his mind, or what he thinks, corrects this error. Just so the Christian Scientist knows the truth about God and man's relationship to Him, and this truth is God's law, and is, therefore, with power to heal and to save.

Mankind are demanding a practical religion and a practical therapeutic system, and no other to be offered to them but the religion and therapeutics of Jesus Christ, who came declaring, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." In this knowing there is no action of the human mind, and no suggestion, but just the actual scientific realization of God's immutable law, before which the false human laws of sin and disease disappear as naturally as the darkness disappears before the light.
