For about two months in the spring of 1912 I struggled with a very painful and annoying ailment, a form of rheumatism. I applied my understanding of Christian Science to the best of my ability and had at least two weeks of treatment by a faithful practitioner, but the trouble did not yield. Most of the time it seemed almost impossible to perform my necessary duties, and I could get but little rest at night. A student of Christian Science and I spent a night together at the home of a mutual friend, and I was led to mention my trouble to her, not, however, asking for or receiving treatment. She talked to me for a while, voicing the truth clearly and firmly, and I knew that it helped me, for my thought was so uplifted that I was able to realize clearly the power of divine Love and the powerlessness of evil. A few hours later I knew that I was completely healed. The disease had simply vanished into its native nothingness. I was so glad and grateful that I returned the next day to give thanks.
