That God is an ever-present help has been proven to us...

That God is an ever-present help has been proven to us frequently during the past four years. Although we have been interested in Science for about nine years, we failed at first to see the necessity for working actively in the truth; but man's extremity, as always, proved to be God's opportunity. We had been helped to overcome bodily ailments many times through Christian Science, for measles, colds, serious throat difficulties, and internal disorders had been met and overcome; yet there remained something more for us to experience before we came to a fuller realization of the power of Truth and its effects on mortal mind and body.

We had thought to prepare for the future by investing in properties which promised quick returns, and we laid great stress on what we could then do for Science and for ourselves, looking almost entirely to the inherent power of material means to supply all we expected to need, instead of "leaning on the sustaining infinite," which "today is big with blessings" (Science and Health, Pref., p. vii). We were not content with investing the cash on hand, but through undue influence invested more. Then began a struggle. Car strikes came on, and business was in a deplorable condition; consequently the values of real estate decreased instead of increasing, till finally there was no demand for it at all. Nevertheless, there were payments and interest to be met, and here our first real hard blow came, for business was so inactive that my husband's services were thought to be no longer needed, at least not for some months, perhaps.

Our monthly income diminished after payments and interest had been subtracted, and we found ourselves without available means. Then, too, we were living out of town, and there were only two more rides left on my husband's commutation ticket, and we had less than three dollars in cash. Our subscription to the Sentinel and Journal expired that month, but it seemed impossible to get along without them, so I asked my husband to take two dollars and go to the reading-room in the city and subscribe for the Sentinel and Journal for six months each, as they were food to me. He did so; and as he was in the city, he thought he would go to his former place of business to see a friend. On entering the door his employer hurriedly came to him, saying, "You are the person I want; I have just dictated a letter to my stenographer asking you to return, as we need you." We, of course, realized that divine Love had opened the way. This was in itself proof of the Master's promise, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
