The presumption of any one making a tramp through the country and subsisting on the charity of the inhabitants for support, has no part whatever in the teaching of Christian Science. It is on a par with the allegation of the tempter when he said to Jesus, "If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread." The Master's reply does not give encouragement to any mortal to assume a greater understanding than he possesses, for Jesus said, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

Christian Science teaches that whenever one is in pursuance of duty, in response to an honest motive or for the relief of suffering humanity, he can do without harm to himself whatever may be necessary, provided he has a clear realization of the omnipotence of God. At the same time, to drink poison or subject oneself to unnecessary danger of any nature in bravado, or to make a boast of a blind faith without understanding, has nothing behind it but the glorification of self, and would prove a weak staff in times of distress.
