AT THE MIDNIGHT HOUR
The Master declared that to know God aright is life eternal. The same truth was expressed by Paul when he wrote, "To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." The understanding of God is eternal and forever harmonious, for it recognizes no element of evil to produce discord or to destroy.
Since the understanding of God is life eternal and includes all good, it must be that this understanding is the effectual remedy for all discord and suffering. The Master knew of no other remedy for the ills of human experience, and he demonstrated that no other is needed. This understanding changed the water into wine, fed the multitudes, provided the tribute money, stilled the tempest, healed the sick, cast out devils, and raised the dead. His demonstration of God's presence and power was complete, and he proved that man comes into the conscious possession of all good in proportion as he gains the understanding of what God is.
No doubt there is that in every human experience which, if rightly regarded and dealt with as it should be, will bring to one a clearer understanding of God, and consequently a fuller realization of Life and its eternal realities. The discords of earth have caused mortals to turn away from the things which brought them suffering; and since good has resulted from this turning away, they have sometimes concluded that suffering is sent of God, or at least that it has the divine sanction. Christian Science, on the contrary, declares that suffering is not sent of God, neither does it even seem to exist by divine permission; and its teaching that discord is no part of man's real being and in no way affects it, has given to thousands that concept of evil which enables them to deal with evil intelligently.
