The February number of The Westminster contains a contribution...

Once-a-Week

The February number of The Westminster contains a contribution on Christian Science to which I beg leave to offer some reply, inasmuch as this article does not deal justly with the teaching of Christian Science, but on the contrary misrepresents it.

In making out what he alleges to be a case against Christian Science, the critic overlooks the fact that Christian Scientists consistently seek but to follow the admonition of Jesus of Nazareth, whom all Christians love and revere. Our Master in speaking to his disciples said, "As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick." Further he said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." One of the last things Jesus is recorded as having said to his disciples is, "These signs shall follow them that believe; ... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Christian Scientists frankly admit that the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, teaches that the whole of Christian Scientists frankly not yet demonstrated, that mortals must grow spiritually and attain a clearer understanding of Truth before they can accomplish all that the Bible promises.

Those who have had experience first with medicine and then with Christian Science treatment testify that their experience with the latter averages far better than their experience with the former; hence their allegiance to Christian Science. Those who have practised first medicine and then Christian Science testify as a rule that in the practise of the latter they have healed a larger percentage of their patients than while practising the former. Thousands of families testify that they fare much better with Christian Science and without medicine than they formerly did with medicine and without Christian Science, and only those who have had experience with both are capable of giving testimony of any value upon this point. Christian Scientists are an enlightened people, consequently they would not be inclined to give their support to any practise which is not demonstrably efficacious. They do not discard material remedies merely to be fanatically loyal to a religious belief, but because they have proved by actual experience that in so doing they are choosing the better way.
