For a great many years I was a hospital nurse, and I...

For a great many years I was a hospital nurse, and I remember once asking a patient who was interested in Christian Science what it was. She said I should wait until I was in great need and I would then understand it. At the beginning of 1908 I had a severe nervous breakdown, which took the form of extreme sleeplessness, with intense neuralgia in my head. This condition lasted almost a year, and as I then began to sleep better, I thought I should get well; but the spine seemed to be affected and my ability to walk became less and less, while I suffered greatly from pain in my back. I went to a hydropathic institution and tried baths, massage, and electricity, but as time went on I grew gradually worse.

At the end of about three years, I was a complete wreek—could hardly read, write, or walk. I was in bed all the time, with the exception of sometimes getting out of doors in a spinal chair. I then heard again of Christian Science, and as a last resource decided to try it, although I did not know much about its power to heal, or that it was a religion and had churches. I could not go to a practitioner, so I had absent treatment, and on the first day I was healed of something from which I had suffered for twenty-five years. At the end of three weeks I was able to go to London alone, and a week after that I could walk a mile. I continued treatment for some months, since the understanding came to me slowly, but during that time I was able to leave off glasses. I am now absolutely healed, and with the healing has come a clearer understanding of God. My gratitude for Christian Science is very great.—Edith M. Smith, London, England.
