I am desirous of expressing my gratitude and telling of the good which has come to me through Christian Science. About four years ago I first heard of its teachings through a friend from America, and I feel all the more indebted to this friend since she showed such patience in answering all my objections. My health had been very poor during the last ten years, and at times I would have as many as two nervous attacks within a day. This weakened me to such an extent that I was confined to the bed the greater part of the time, or at least I had to lie on a couch. I consulted many physicians, every one of whom said and prescribed something different but all proved a failure. Besides this I suffered from great mental distress, which would come over me as seen as darkness set in, and was so intense that I could never stay alone in the evening.
I have been freed of these sad conditions solely through the study of Science and Health and the endeavor to put into practise what I have grasped, for I never applied to a practitioner for help. After securing a copy of the text-book, I carried it home like a treasure, for many were the beautiful citations from it which I had read in Der Herold der Christian Science. When, however, I started reading (we did not have the advantage of a German translation at that time), I discovered that my knowledge of English was so small that the study was not possible without the aid of a dictionary; but I soon saw that Christian Science helps us as much to overcome difficulties in the study of a language as in solving any other problem.
I could tell of other benefits which I have received, not only physically, but also in a business way, for which I am most thankful to God. I am also grateful to our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the spiritual freedom which I have received through Christian Science. I have experienced in my own case the truth of the Master's words: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
