In March, 1905, I was taken with a severe attack of acute lung trouble. I called a doctor, and in examining me he said that one of my lungs was badly affected, that I would have to do certain things, and that if I refused he would not treat me. This was the fourth day. after I had been taken ill. I dismissed him, and as there was no other doctor in town I began to prescribe for myself. In two days my fever had become very high, and I felt that if I did not receive relief from some source I could not live long. The fall before this, my wife had taken up Christian Science, and I had been healed of a severe stomach trouble. She naturally wanted me to try Christian Science again, and while I thought it was all right for her, I cared nothing about it myself, not understanding the truth. I told my wife to go for a notary public to attend to my business, for I would have to die, but her particular friend, a Christian Science practitioner, called about this time, and she said I need not die if I did not want to. When I asked her if she could heal pneumonia, she said she could not, but that God could. I then asked her if she would give me treatment; she said she would if I would give up medicine and the taking of my temperature. I consented to do as she requested.

This conversation took place about three o'clock in the afternoon, and in a short time I became unconscious, so that my wife thought I was dead. I realized nothing until about seven o'clock, when everything became clear to me again and I was free from the illness, excepting that I was very weak. The next morning, however, I was up at the breakfast table, eating breakfast, when the practitioner came in at half past six. An obstructed condition of the bowels was overcome almost at once, and on the following morning I was out taking care of my team. When the doctor was told that I was out he said it was impossible! I was back at my work, well-drilling, inside of two weeks, however, and out in all kinds of weather, with no bad effect.

I will mention another experience with instantaneous healing. A tooth was paining me, my face was badly swollen, and my wife called in the same practitioner. This was late in the evening, so I went to bed, slept well all night, and in the morning my tooth was all right and gave me no further trouble. I am grateful for the quick relief experienced on both occasions, and it is my desire to understand more of this truth and to practise it in my daily life, for only in this way can we prove our deep-felt gratitude to God, and our thankfulness to Mrs. Eddy for her labor for humanity.
