I wish to tell of a demonstration which was recently made for me, and which to me seems wonderful, although I have studied Science for a number of years and have had many proofs of what it can do. I was in a hurry to get a piece of silk cleaned, so I heated some gasoline (which I had never done in the house before), and had almost finished the work when I noticed a small flame burning in the gasplate. I immediately started to turn it out, not thinking of the gasoline on my hands. Just as I did so the fire leaped and caught my hands, and a great flame shot across the room, causing an explosion which knocked me down; but I at once declared that God's child could not be hurt. A dressmaker who was here at the time rushed to the kitchen and found me lying on the floor, my hands, hair, and clothes all on fire, and also the window curtains. She immediately put the fire out by using a woolen blanket which was at hand, and then dragged down the blazing curtains. As quickly as possible I went to the telephone and called a Christian Science practitioner.

Right here I wish to tell how divine Love kept my thought so clear that I knew what to do, for at that time I seemed to be suffering terrible agony. My eyebrows and lashes were almost burned off, but my eyes were not hurt, for as soon as I saw the flame shoot out I closed my eyes and declared the truth. My whole face was badly scorched, but the treatment overcame that very quickly and I never suffered from it. My hands were however burned dreadfully and presented a terrible appearance. My arms also were burned to some extent, the wrists very badly, but I never looked at them until I could realize the spiritual facts of being. For about three quarters of an hour I felt like the Christian of old who were burned at the stake, and in the old way of thinking I could not have stood it all; but having had many proofs of God's power before, I was enabled "to stand," and this left the practitioner free to do her work.

At first the fear of death had to be met, and in fact for almost a week, since the shock seemed even worse than the burns on the hands; but divine Love was good and I am completely healed, without a mark or scar on me. After that first hour I did not have any more pain until about midnight, when a reaction seemed to set in, and during the rest of the night I seemed to suffer greatly again. But these comforting words suddenly came to me: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings" (Science and Health, Pref., p. vii). If I did not fully realize their truth then, I surely realized it afterward, for in less than twenty-four hours I was free from all pain, and I never had any more.

It seems to me I never can be half grateful enough to God for this healing, and to Mrs. Eddy for bringing us the truth which sets us free, and to the one who so faithfully worked for me and enabled me to see God's word made flesh. For three days I did not use either hand, but after that I commenced using the tips of my fingers to handle things. In one month new flesh and even muscles had grown, so that I had as it were a pair of new hands. Thus was God's word proven to be "quick and powerful."

I had with me for five days one who had been a trained nurse before coming into Christian Science, as I was helpless when it came to doing anything for myself. She said afterward that according to medical opinion my hands could not have been saved, and that it was wonderful I had lived through the ordeal. If further information is required, I can give the nurse's name and address and also that of the dressmaker who was here at the time, and who was not a Scientist. I hope this testimony may help some one else to realize the power of Truth more clearly, as demonstrations often do.—Mrs. W. W. Fogg, Oakland, Cal.
