About eight years ago I experienced healing in Christian Science
About eight years ago I experienced healing in Christian Science. I was at that time practically without religion, being able to think of God only in a vague way as an unknowable "great First Cause." Physically I was wretchedly ill and unhappy, and casual conversations with friends who professed to have been cured in Christian Science determined me to ask the help of a practitioner. I did so, and in a short time I was healed of nervous exhaustion in an extreme form. At the same time I was cured of a chronic stomach difficulty, and very soon permanently laid aside glasses which I had worn for about twelve years. The healing has remained, and I have never since had any return of these troubles.
These physical results seemed wonderful, but the measure of understanding of God and man which Christian Science has bestowed is the great and ever-unfolding marvel. The mental recognition of Love as Principle,—the underlying, causative, and eternally sustaining energy and substance,—is soon achieved. Then comes the Christian Scientist's daily miracle,—the application of this understanding in daily life, by which it becomes a practical working knowledge through which we actually prove that the universe means universal good.
I know that I, with all other Christian Scientists, am as yet only beginning to walk in the way; only beginning to know how to love my enemies, whether they seem to be persons or circumstances. But I have already learned to criticize much less and appreciate much more, learned something of how actually to make friends of foes and ladders of stumbling-blocks, and am correspondingly happier and more useful. However ineffectively I am able to apply the lesson, it is none the less mine to live toward; and I know that this growing spiritual illumination is the progress "from glory to glory" which Paul promised. Nothing but Christian Science could have convinced me that happiness lies in self-restraint and self-abnegation, for nothing but Christian Science could have proved it.
