One of the things that interested me most in coming into...
One of the things that interested me most in coming into the understanding of Christian Science was the testimonies of those who had been healed by reading our text-book, Science and Health. In order to prove for myself some of the statements I had heard, I decided that I would rely upon the written word of Truth when the need of help appeared. Not many days after this decision, I was taken with severe pains in my chest, attended with chills and fever, an old-time complaint which usually lasted two weeks. When the first symptoms were manifested one evening about eight o'clock, I began to read Science and Health, and continued reading until two in the morning. A great change of thought took place at this time, and every sign of the ailment passed into its native nothingness. This was my starting-point in Science.
The illumination of my consciousness by Truth from that time until the present, which is now over ten years, has been beautiful and inspiring. During this time I have not resorted to medicine or used any appliances for dispelling pain of any sort. The words of one of our hymns have been proved true to me, "Day by day the manna fell," and this increased my faith in God. Our belived Leader, Mrs. Eddy, tells us on page 410 of Science and Health, "Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger. The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love." For all the benefits I have received in Christian Science I am truly grateful to God, also to Mrs. Eddy and all who have given a helping hand and word.—Elizabeth Smith, Brooklyn, N. Y.
The healing of my mother occurred as above stated. No material remedies were used in accomplishing the cure. My mother's great love for knowledge of God and the perfect man has caused her to resort to the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," daily, both for the healing of all ills and as a preventive. The healing of my mother took place at a time when error had a free voice in our household, and all ills were discussed very minutely, but increased understanding of the truth has reduced such conversation to the extent that ills are only mentioned after they have been proved to be nothing and the healing effected.
