It is with a heart filled with gratitude to God, and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, that I write this testimony, in the hope that it may prove a help to some fellow being. I had been suffering for many years with a disease which manifested itself as pain in the head, back, and abdominal region. A physician for women's diseases made an examination in January, 1907, and stated that I had a growth which would have to be removed by an operation; but I could not make up my mind to submit to this. The following August hemorrhages were added, and I consulted two other specialists, whose diagnosis was identical with that of the first doctor, the only difference being that they insisted upon the operation being performed at once. I then decided to submit to the operation, and another examination was made in order to ascertain if the heart action was good. I was then asked if I knew that I had an organic disease of the heart, the doctor telling me that I could not, on this account, take an anesthetic; which filled me with such fear that I thought I must die.
In this state of despair I wrote to my brother, who had been in Christian Science for several years after having been healed of the morphine habit in four weeks' time. He wired: "Come at once," and on the following Wednesday I went to Berlin, broken in mind and body. We called upon a practitioner, who explained to me a few things, though I did not understand much of what she said; but I began to study by taking up the ninety-first Psalm, my chief endeavor being to get the sense of God's care and protection. After the third treatment the hemorrhages which I had had for eight weeks stopped. It was the first Sunday on which I attended the service, and I cannot describe my joy; I was filled with gratitude, for I felt that God is omnipotent and ever present. Beautiful days followed; it became more and more clear to me that the truth alone makes free. Thus I spent four happy weeks in Berlin, surrounded by dear Science people for whose kindness, patience, love, and hospitality I would also express my thanks. I returned home filled with joy and happiness, feeling that I had found the most precious pearl, Christian Science.
A few days later my little boy, then seven years old, came from school crying, the teacher having sent him home on account of earache. With my small understanding I explained to him that God is omnipresent, and that he need have no pain. I read the ninety-first and twenty-third Psalms to him, and he fell asleep. At noon he awoke in a cheerful mood, and said he had no more pain. How grateful I was to God for this proof of divine Love. Later on the little fellow had an attack of a throat disease and lay in bed with high fever. My husband wanted to call a physician, but I asked him to wait until the Christian Science practitioner had received my despatch. This was about five o'clock; at six the fever had abated, and the next morning the boy asked to go to school. What a wonderful proof this was to me! I was filled with gratitude. Later on our boy injured his ankle while practising gymnastics at school, but the trouble was overcome with a few treatments in Christian Science. He seldom says anything now when he has some ailment to overcome, but does his own work. Children are near to God; they are not of a doubtful mind.
