AMONG THE CHURCHES
Progress is being made with the erection of the Christian Science church on Macdonnell road. The site, purchased from government last August, contains three thousand nine hundred square feet. The edifice will consist of a central hall, a reading-room, and two readers' rooms. The central hall will have a polished white marble floor, with a ten-inch skirting board to match, from the quarries and mill at Ipoh, F. M. S. The aisles and rostrum will be finely carpeted. The seats will be of teak and the seating capacity is estimated to be about one hundred and fifty. Behind the rostrum there will be five stained glass windows. The edifice will occupy two thousand three hundred square feet, and the remaining ground will be laid out as a garden. It is expected that the structure will be completed by the first of the year. Its cost will be about sixteen thousand dollars.
Yesterday morning [July 25] at nine o'clock the cornerstone of the edifice was laid by William D. McCrackan, M.A., who read selections from the Bible and then correlative passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. This was followed by silent prayer, and then by the audible repetition of the Lord's Prayer. The service was closed by the reading of the "scientific statement of being" from the Christian Science text-book, Science and Health (p. 468). The hermetically sealed jar in the corner-stone contains a Bible, a copy of Science and Health, "Miscellaneous Writings," and the Manual of The Mother Church, by Mary Baker Eddy, a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel, of the Journal, and of the Monitor, a history of the Hongkong Christian Science Society, a list of the present members, a Hongkong Daily Press of July 15, a South China Morning Post, China Mail, and Hongkong Telegraph of July 21, and a copy of the society's by-laws.—Hongkong Press.
