I have been a member of a Christian Science church for...
I have been a member of a Christian Science church for over two years, and during this interval was relieved of several minor ailments, also of a severe attack of stomach trouble, which I overcame myself. All this time, however, I was not satisfied that I had the understanding of life apart from matter, and study as I would, enlightenment did not come; yet I strove for it daily, and now see that I was slowly but surely drawing nearer the goal, as I prayed for guidance, humility, and patience until the light should come.
One morning in May, 1910, I had symptoms of a very severe headache, but I went to my office, thinking the error would be destroyed by night. I however continued to grow worse, and by the third day my face was so swollen that many friends and business acquaintances began to ask questions, and I went home at noon. On my arrival a neighbor who is a doctor saw me, and said it looked like erysipelas to him. The next day conditions were so aggravated that I sent for a practitioner, who came that same afternoon and gave me a treatment. My wife, who is not a Scientist, became alarmed and begged me to let her send for a doctor, but I replied that the case was in the hands of the "great Physician," and if she would promise to let me obey the instructions of the practitioner, she could send for all the doctors she wanted to, if she found that the truth failed to cure me. She promised, and most nobly did she keep her word.
In the mean time the illness continued, and by the following day the swelling had rendered me practically blind, with my sense of hearing (I have since a child been afflicted with some deafness in both ears) almost totally destroyed. That afternoon the practitioner came out and told my wife what to do, and began to work systematically with such good results that when the next day I consented at my wife's earnest request to allow the doctor to diagnose the case, although he pronounced it a severe case of erysipelas, he added that I was better than when he had seen me three days previous.
