THE LECTURES

A lecture was delivered by Willis F. Gross Oct. 24 at the Windsor Hall, Montreal. Walter J. Stethem, member of the Anglican Cathedral, introduced Mr. Gross, and said in part,—

It is generally conceded that the world of religious thought is awakening to the importance of knowing just where it stands, and those who have closely followed the trend of this thought must come to the conclusion that the thinking men and women of the day are very much interested in that momentous question which Pilate put to Christ Jesus nearly two thousand years ago, "What is truth?" But, in contrast to Pilate, these inquirers are hungering for the answer, and will not turn away with indifference ere they receive it.

This evening we are the guests of an earnest band of Christians working for good in this city, who in providing this lecture upon Christian Science do so, not with a view of proselyting, but rather as a means of replying to much unjust criticism and to remove misconceptions regarding their religion. This religion they claim to be the same as that preached and practised by our Lord Jesus Christ and followed by the early Christians, and they take the inspired word as their full and sufficient guide. Surely, then, if other religious bodies cannot see their way to extend the hand of brotherly love, the least they can do as professed followers of Jesus is to judge Christian Scientists, if they will judge, by that test given by the Master by which his true followers should be known in that and all future ages: "Ye shall know them by their fruits."
