Since my restoration to health, I have thought I should...
Since my restoration to health, I have thought I should write the facts about my wonderful healing, in order that some poor sufferer might be benefited thereby. I was led to Christian Science through the kindness of a neighbor, who was not a Christian Scientist, but who knew of some of its beneficial effects in her own family. She sent me some literature, in which I found a remarkable instance of healing. I was not then able to read much, so my husband read it to me, and after some discussion we concluded that what had helped another so much would surely help me a little.
We began at once to seek a practitioner, though not knowing where to look, and finally found one located about seven miles from us in a busy little town. My illness was nervous breakdown, with a complication of chronic diseases, among them a catarrhal affection of the stomach and bowels. I had been in bed most of the time for about seven months, during which time we had employed three medical doctors, also an osteopath, and had a nurse to care for me, as I was too weak to help myself and could not even see my friends, as every exertion caused such dreadful exhaustion. In having to suffer continually, and be obliged to keep such perfect isolation, I felt as though the cord would soon snap that seemed to hold me, but I was suddenly awakened from the gross materiality of it all to the fulness of Life, to the spiritual reality of all things.
When the Christian Science practitioner called upon me, she found me in bed, unable to sit up long enough to eat my scanty diet; but when she turned the search-light of Truth upon me, it revealed at once the unreality of it all. I was immediately healed, so that I arose from my bed and walked across the room several times without help, which I had been unable to do even once. From that time I gained very rapidly, and gave up all medicine and material help, looking instead to the all-power, all-presence of God for my sustenance and growth. The practitioner left me a copy of Science and Health, which I read almost continually, and on the third day I went to the table to eat with the family, much to their surprise and alarm; but I continued to do so, and felt like a culprit escaped from prison. When told that I could eat anything I wanted,—no medical laws to bar my way, but freedom,—then came the sense of dominion over all things. I gained very rapidly, and in six weeks from the first treatment I dismissed my help and have managed my own household ever since.
