Myself and family certainly have great reason to be grateful to Mrs. Eddy, for teaching us that God heals today the same as He did centuries ago; also to God, for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us since we have learned to live and think aright. About twelve years ago, I came home one day with such severe pain through my body, especially in my right side, that I could neither sit nor lie down without intense suffering. I had five physicians that afternoon, but in the evening, my father, who was a Christian Scientist, having been healed of organic heart trouble in its worst form, said he would like to have me try Science. I told him that Christian Science might be all right for a weak heart, but I knew it could not relieve the pain I was suffering, and that I would prefer a physician. They called one that I knew, and he said that I had all the symptoms of appendicitis, but he preferred to hold a consultation. Later he came back with one of the best physicians in this city, who agreed with his diagnosis, and said they would have to operate in the morning.
If they had been able to assure me that the operation would be a success, this story might never have been told, but all the encouragement they could give me was that I had one chance in fifty. I considered this too uncertain, and decided to try Christian Science, reserving the operation for a last resort. A practitioner was called, and during his treatment I began to vomit. I was soon relieved, and slept quite well all night. I continued to improve, and in a week or ten days was up and around all right. I had a few slight attacks after that, perhaps a year or so apart, but they grew less troublesome each time, until they ceased entirely. It is now about seven years since I have had any such symptoms, and recently I was pronounced physically perfect by the doctor of one of the largest insurance companies.
After this wonderful healing it was seven years before I came into Christian Science, as I was not ready to give up a few worldly pleasures which I thought necessary for my happiness. Since coming into Christian Science I know absolutely that there is more genuine pleasure in knowing that you have gone through the day living and thinking the truth than in aught else. We have five children, two of them born before we came into Science and three since. With the first two, my wife stayed in bed two or three weeks, but with the last three we only called a physician to comply with the law, and she was able to be up in a day or two after the birth. To prove that this getting up so soon has had no ill effects on her, I would say that she is healthier and better looking every day.
