I feel it to be my duty to testify to the benefits which I have received from Christian Science. I was troubled with catarrh for many years, also a stomach disorder and insomnia, besides a bad case of varicose veins, affecting both of my limbs. These had troubled me for nineteen years, and for nearly fourteen years I was practically a cripple. They had healed up some time ago, but broke out again in the center of the old scar. It affected the bone to some extent, and threatened to make me serious trouble.

It was at this time that I had my attention drawn to Christian Science, and when I became lame a friend kindly advised me to go to a Christian Science practitioner, which I, with little faith, consented to do; but I nevertheless began to improve. I was encouraged at this, and on being assured that the manner of healing was the same that the Saviour and his apostles practised, I became interested, and bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I was then staying in a soldiers' home, and after a few days an old comrade who had been given up by doctors, and told that he could not be helped by Christian Science, came to me and asked to borrow the book. I let him have it, and in a short time he began to mend. His despair changed to hope; he had faith that he would get better, and it made a new and different man of him. To me it was a wonderful and convincing proof of the power of divine Truth to heal disease, no matter if it were considered incurable. This comrade came here with me from the home in April, 1909, and visited the same Christian Scientist, and he is steadily improving under her instructions.

The greatest wonder to me was when I for the first time told the lady what I considered my worst trouble, which had annoyed me more and more as time went on for at least twenty-five years. I told her of it in the evening, and the next morning I was astonished to find that the trouble had disappeared and I have never had it since. A doctor had told me that it was a case of very great enlargement of the affected glands, and it caused me to be entirely helpless when my strength was reduced by a fever. This doctor was the chief operating surgeon at Ancon Hospital, Panama (Canal Zone), and together with the first assistant surgeon made a personal examination of my case. The chief surgeon told me that nothing could be done to relieve me except to have an operation performed. He advised me to go north, as soon as I had regained sufficient strength to warrant it, and have this done. Other doctors told me the same, and said that the trouble would probably grow worse, and that at my age the sooner the operation was performed the better.
