I first heard of Christian Science when I was attacked by dizziness to which I had long been subject. The attack came on me while I was in a little shop, and the proprietor's wife took me to her living-rooms in the same house, and said she would help me. This she did, and she then told me of Christian Science, which had enabled her to aid me.
I had always been a church-goer and a reader of the Bible; it was therefore no task for me to recognize God's hand in the blessed work, and I laid the lesson to heart. One day while on the street I was again attacked with the dizziness. But I remembered that God was with me, and, relying on His sustaining hand, I felt a thrill pass through my whole being; the dizziness vanished, and has never returned. I have felt overflowing gratitude for the peace and comfort Christian Science has brought to me in restoring me to health that had been badly shattered, and I am daily gaining in health and spirits as well as regaining my flesh, after having been reduced almost to skeleton proportions.
To understand my condition it will be necessary to review my experience of a year previous to my hearing of Christian Science. In April, 1908, I underwent a surgical operation in San Francisco for the removal of a growth which had greatly troubled me for years. The trouble had been diagnosed as a stomach disorder, and treated as such until a specialist was consulted, who said I had about four weeks to live unless an operation relieved me. I went to a hospital, and left after two weeks, although the surgeon said I must stay four weeks. I had even then unbounded faith in God, and that faith sustained me, but I did not have the understanding that gives full aid.
