Christian Science was brought to my attention by a relative who had been wonderfully healed by its ministry, and when she gave me the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," I was almost afraid to read it, for fear it was something that was not orthodox. I little dreamed that Christian Science had come to me in answer to a lifelong desire for a more satisfying religion.
I am thankful that I did not let prejudice hinder me from reading the text-book, and one thing which especially attracted me to it was the statement that it was the "Key to the Scriptures," for I loved the Bible and found much comfort and help from its pages, though I always read it with the thought that it could not be understood, as it seemed to deal more with past and future events than it did with present-day problems. I believed it to be the inspired word of God, but this was a blind belief without understanding. Like many others, I had been trying to serve God through the medium of matter, believing that He knew and permitted evils and offered no way of escape from sin and disease except through death, by which we would enter heaven if we had accepted the doctrine of vicarious atonement. As to hell, I seemed to be having more than my share of it right here.
So bitter had been my experience before Christian Science came to me, that I had lost faith in everything but God, and I prayed that I might not lose that. Finally, as a climax to the many things I had suffered, my daughter, then in her eighteenth year, passed out very suddenly, leaving me bereft of all my earthly hopes. It was indeed the darkest hour before the dawn. The anguish of that hour was dreadful, and it was only through the loving help given me by Christian Science friends, that I was saved from insanity or utter collapse. I then turned to Christian Science as my only hope, and studied Science and Health faithfully, with an earnest desire to know the truth which Jesus said would make us free, and as the result a great baptism of light and love came to me. I had found the living Christ, Immanuel, God with us!
