Nearly two years ago I was healed absolutely and almost...
Nearly two years ago I was healed absolutely and almost instantly through the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. It came about in this way: In August, 1908, I was away out in a little town in Colorado, stopping at a friend's house. They were somewhat interested in Christian Science, and had the text-book, Science and Health. One Sunday morning I picked it up and began to read. At that time I was suffering greatly from a dreadful skin disease, so that I could not sit up without pain. I became so interested in this book that I read until I was called for dinner, which was about two o'clock. I found I had been reading for about five hours, which was something I had not done for years, as my eyes had troubled me so much that I had given up reading almost altogether. After dinner I went at it again, and read until away on into the night. Then I waked up and read for about three hours in the early morning. The next morning I began again, but after reading the book nearly two days I could only understand a few statements; yet there was something about it which led me on.
That night I read until after eleven, and when I went to take off my glasses I found that I had been reading all the evening without them. I have not used them since, though I have done more reading than I had in years. The following morning I ran down the hill, something I had not done for a long time, as my joints would ache so with rheumatism that I could hardly walk in the morning. I also remarked to my friend that I had not had a drink or smoke since Saturday night; and as this was Tuesday morning, it was something unusual for me, as I was a heavy drinker. I had drank all my life, except a few years when I joined the church and resolved to do better and did do better. But that awful desire for drink never left me, until I came into the understanding of Christian Science. I was also a heavy smoker; I had used tobacco in all its forms, but now I have no desire for it.
I had become so interested in Christian Science that I at once sent to Boston for a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and also for a Quarterly. I then found, to my surprise, that I needed a Bible; so the dear friends where I was stopping gave me one for a present. As I traveled a good deal, I had to make room in my grip for the books; so I threw out all my medicine, and from that time on I have not used any material remedy. One of these remedies I had carried was for stomach trouble. One doctor had told me that if I indulged in certain foods I was liable to drop off any time, so I thought I had to be very careful what I ate. The skin disease was the last to leave me. I had been treated for this by several different doctors, the best I could find, but none of them gave me any help except temporary relief, and I had been told that the trouble was incurable. About thirteen years ago I injured my side very badly, and one doctor told me that I would never again be able to carry on my business as I had done; but since I have come into the understanding of Christian Science, I have carried heavy weights up several flights of stairs, many times a day, without experiencing any trouble.
