Anaheim (Cal.) Plain Dealer
"Layman" says, "Our very senses affirm matter to be real." Our eyes sometimes affirm a mirage to be real. These same senses affirm that the sun rises, that the horizon is a fixed line, that the earth is flat, and that the rails of a railroad converge in the distance. As a matter of fact, every sense impression must be corrected by thought before it can even simulate intelligence. Could there be any sense testimony without thought? Take away the so-called mortal mind, and the senses give no evidance of existence. Christian Science is revealing God to humanity, and this unreality of matter becomes manifest. Critics must give earnest heed to what Christian Science gives in place of what it takes away. Then, and only then, will they be able to understand the statements regarding evil, sin, disease, and death. We cannot find God by searching from a material standpoint. We must classify the spiritual as the real because it is like God, Spirit. All else "profiteth nothing," and is therefore temporal, finite, unreal. It is on this basis that Christian Science is bringing the Life that is "the light of men."
As understood in Christian Science, man is spiritual because he is the image and likeness of God. This man is not a mortal. No endeavor is made to place the false mortal concept of man on a basis with or on the level of God. In revealing the real nature of man, Christian Science uncovers and destroys the philosophy of the serpent, root and branch. Here again our critic is reasoning from a material standpoint in discussing spiritual things. You cannot mix the two, any more than light can commune with darkness or Christ have concord with Belial.
If "Layman" will give earnest heed to the teaching of Christian Science in the light of the spiritual illumination it is bringing to humanity, he will find that this is a practical, logical, and consistent religion, come to reaffirm the Christ-teaching, leading "into all truth." He will also find that this Science frees from all forms of disease and reclaims from sin. Furthermore, he will see the way open for all to prove that the "last enemy" will be overcome, in strict accord with the Scriptural promises. It is "by their fruits ye shall know them," and "every good tree bringeth forth good fruit."
