[Written for the Sentinel.]

LOVE

My heart was full of rapture yesterday,—
With sweetest joy my being overflowed,
For Love with me sojourned. Love then bestowed
A song that in my heart shall live alway,
Diffused, persistent, sweet; and though today
Love seems no more to brighten my abode,
Lack-luster now what then effulgent glowed
In splendor bright, yet Love's loss I gainsay.
Love hath its rhythm, its glorious day, no night,—
Love's presence making light, Love knows no dark
(Though sometimes I myself obscure the light
And lengthening shadows grim I cast). But mark:
The sun of Love keeps e'er his constant course,
From Love no dark, no shadow, has its source.
