Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy was eighty-nine years old yesterday. No woman of the present day is known to more people than is she. It is probably quite correct to say that in all the world's history there have been few women who have been so reverenced as is she. It is also true that there have been few who have been more savagely attacked than she, and few subjected to so much ridicule.

She is a wonderful woman. Whether one believes or not in the religion which she has established, and which has won its millions of followers throughout the world, one must concede this much. ... The fact that she has developed it until it has become the power it is, that she has organized it as no other religion has ever been organized, the fact that she rules her followers as few heads of a church have ever done, these things mark her as a wonderful woman. And it must also be conceded that Christian Science has done a great deal in many ways for many people.
