AMONG THE CHURCHES
With two congregations which taxed the capacity of the building, the new First Church of Christ, Scientist, located at the corner of Bluff street and Garden lane, was formally opened yesterday [May 22]. The entire cost of the church is about fifteen thousand dollars. The building takes its place at once among the most beautiful of Beloit's many beautiful churches. It is finished within in pure white, the only spots of color being found in the seats and the carpets. Opera chairs are used for seating. J. B. Dow, president of the church organization, at the conclusion of the regular service in the evening, gave a brief address upon "The Occasion," in part as follows:—
"In the city of Beloit there has been an organization of Christian Scientists for upward of twenty years—this First Church of Christ, Scientist, was chartered under the laws of the state of Wisconsin in 1904. The first steps toward building this home structure, where larger opportunities could be afforded, were taken some three years ago by the purchase of the site where we now are. Closely following the event,—when we could read our title clear,—a building committee was appointed, charged with the unique responsibility of materializing such consummation as you witness here tonight. Relatively few in number, such a proposition would have been startling had it not been for the fact that the few in number believed that in God is infinite supply. On the morning of the fourth day of July, 1909, ground was broken and the work of construction begun. Later, on the second day of October, this cornerstone was laid, and last night, May 21, 1910, the finishing strokes were heard. The rising sun today witnessed the opening of the doors, surmounted with the greeting, 'How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel.' In this work, the consummation of which is so gratifying tonight, both to ourselves and to you who have gathered with us, there have been kindly hands extended and kindly wishes; and some of those kindly hands have been happily reinforced with tokens of substantial aid. In recognition of this, and voicing the spiritual consciousness of our membership, perhaps I can say nothing kindlier, sweeter, or truer of them than this, 'Of such is the kingdom of heaven.'"
