Christian Science recognizes that to the human sense...

Independence (Ia.) Conservative

Christian Science recognizes that to the human sense of things, pain, poverty, disease, and death seem very real, but they also recognize clearly that the Christian religion as explained in Christian Science includes the panacea for all these ills, an adequate and satisfactory means by which they may be overcome. The Bible teaches that sickness and sin, poverty and death, imperfection and limitation of every sort, can be and will be at some time and under right conditions abolished. Therefore, it teaches that these things are not part of the ultimate condition of man. From this we must logically conclude that they are simply a phase of the phenomena of human experience, of what St. Paul terms the "carnal mind," and of which he said, "To be carnally minded is death," stating also, "but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." If our critic had anything of an adequate understanding of what Christian Science includes, he would know that the purpose of Christian Science is to implant within individual consciousness that "spiritual-mindedness" which brings man into a clearer recognition of his divine rights as an heir of God and joint heir with Christ.

I have been reliably informed that in the course of his talk this critic took occasion to make slighting and disparaging remarks concerning the character of the revered Christian woman who stands as the recognized Leader of the Christian Science movement. In this he spoke without knowledge of facts. All who really know Mrs. Eddy, regardless of their religious affiliations, love and esteem her for what she really is and for what she has done humanity. Good deeds know no creed nor dogma, and that which results in good, that which has been of inestimable benefit and value to hundreds of thousands of people by way of a healing and redemptive teaching, certainly cannot or could not emanate from anything other than right desire, motives, and purposes. Mrs. Eddy's life has been characterized by the most earnest conscientious Christian living, and the results of her work are their full justification. Jesus said, "A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit." Again he said, "By their fruits ye shall know them." The fruits of Christian Science are very clearly manifested in those conditions of Christian right living which are most desirable and which make the best citizens; therefore, those who are best acquainted with Christian Science and with Mrs. Eddy's life-work are those who can best appreciate its intrinsic value to humanity.
