The wonderful truth which Christian Science teaches...

The wonderful truth which Christian Science teaches came into our home in January, 1909, through an incident which follows, though words are hardly sufficient to express our thanks. About the time mentioned I went to see a lady with whom I was acquainted and who owned a store, as she was bedridden and I liked to be of some help to her. One afternoon a salesman came in, and hearing of the lady's illness asked if she would not try to get help in Christian Science. Up to that time I had not heard of Christian Science, but I asked this gentleman a few questions, which were answered in such a kind way that I felt a desire to attend one of these services. On the following Sunday I went to church for the first time in years, and I cannot describe the wonderful change that has come into my life since that Sunday. My dear husband, I am thankful to say, immediately agreed to take up the study of this healing truth. We secured the wonderful book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and derived from it daily more spiritual light. About Christmas, 1909, came the test which is the chief motive for sending in this testimony.

About that time I bruised the thumb of my right hand, causing considerable pain for the first few moments. As the pain disappeared, however, and no injury was visible on the finger, I attended to my duties just as I had done before, without in any way applying the wonderful teaching of Christian Science. On New Year night, however. I felt such pain in the thumb that I could not sleep. I began to declare the truth as best I knew how, but the finger grew worse. The condition grew more alarming, the arm being swollen; indeed the whole side of the body was affected, and I could neither eat nor sleep, nor do any mental work. In my great distress once more I opened the text-book and noted the advice which our beloved Mrs. Eddy gives us (Science and Health, p. 420), that if we cannot heal ourselves readily, we should not continue to suffer, but ask a Scientist to help us.

I immediately sent for a practitioner, who came as soon as she could. She worked with great love, and her work was successful, for in spite of all the pain I fell asleep; but when I awoke, the pain awoke also. I then asked for absent treatment, as I had already enough comprehension of Christian Science to understand that the spiritual has nothing to do with personal presence. Every day I struggled to overcome the lie with the truth, and by Saturday night my condition had so much improved that I was able to hold the Bible in my hands. I opened it, and my eyes at once fell on the passage where it tells how Jesus healed on the Sabbath day. My spiritual strength returned, and I began to study the Lesson-Sermon on Sacrament, which did me good. About five o'clock in the morning I fell asleep, feeling that God was with me and that evil could have no power over me. At nine o'clock my husband woke me up. He was very much surprised that I should be able to sleep so well in spite of the condition of my hand and arm, but I exclaimed, "I am free!" and from that hour I had no more pain. The healing of the wound which had formed was slow but wonderful. I was at once able to resume my household duties, and even worked more than usual, as my work was very much behindhand. Several of my friends who do not yet study this wonderful truth marvel how such a trouble could be cured without an operation or the help of a physician, but my dear husband and I were firm in our trust in eternal, divine Love, who is our best physician and is always near us; all we have to do is to receive.
