That Christian Science heals only that class of diseases...
Winsted (Conn.) Citizen
That Christian Science heals only that class of diseases which the medical profession considers due to hysteria, as claimed in an article in a recent issue of this paper, is a very old theory, and one which has been used over and over by those who have attempted to discredit Christian Science healing. Those who advance this claim show a great lack of familiarity with what Christian Science has done and is doing for mankind, and also fail to appreciate that a very large majority of the cases healed in Christian Science had been diagnosed by many different reputable physicians and often by specialists recognized as the highest authority. to attempt to show that such healing has not been accomplished, on the ground that Christian Scientists do not offer competent testimony as to such healing in a great many cases, results in questioning the competency of the medical profession to diagnose disease and also to ignore entirely the statements of many disinterested individuals who have been in positions to know thoroughly the history of these cases and to observe conditions for themselves.
To consider that pain is an ordinance of God requires us to believe that pain is good; and as pain cannot possibly be good it certainly must be evil, the opposite of good. Since the Scriptures teach that God is Love, it becomes a very difficult problem to reconcile with that fact the proposition that He causes suffering. To credit God with causing pain makes God the source of two opposites, evil and good, which is clearly an impossibility, for from the same fountain cannot flow both bitter and sweet water. Again, if God is Love, He cannot precipitate evil, for Love (good) and evil cannot abide together.
