[Written for the Sentinel.]

THE CRUSE OF PLENTY

I have learned a helpful lesson
Which a sweet assurance brings,—
Just a lesson to be thankful
For the gift of little things.
It has taught me to be patient,
And each day to understand
That to have the cruse of plenty
I must use the best at hand.

I have learned that little blessings
Tell of greater ones in store,
And that he who joys in few things
Always gets full many more.
I have found that small beginnings
Are most often just the ways
Which lead up to high successes
And to happiest of days.

I am sure that richest blessings
Are right here within our reach,
And that I shall not be lacking
If I practise as I preach.
So I'd fain be up and doing,
Lest I fail to understand
That the one whose cruse is fullest
Has used well the things at hand.
