"AWAKE THOU THAT SLEEPEST."

The old-time message of Christianity is repeated in Christian Science: "Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light." It is an immense relief to the majority of us to learn, through the teachings of this restatement of Christianity, that human existence, with all its struggles and its woes, is but a passing dream, and that the real God-given life is ideal,—all that is noble, desirable, and lasting; yes, that which satisfies our longings as nothing else can.

After all, it is of small moment whether the dream be pleasant or unpleasant; the main thing is to wake up. The awakening consists of overcoming evil of every kind with good, of patiently and persistently putting the truth in the place of the lie; thus putting off mortality and putting on immortality, putting off corruption and putting on incorruption, until man is seen to be perfect, even as our "Father which is in heaven is perfect." It matters little what our difficulties are or seem to be; the important thing, and the only thing worth remembering, is how to overcome them and gain those glorious glimpses of reality which are like the angels that came and ministered unto Christ Jesus, who, as our beloved Leader tells us. "triumphed in furnace fires" (Messages to The Mother Church, p. 93).

Christianly scientific awakening requires first an understanding of the nature of God and man, and second that we demonstrate this understanding according to the golden rule. Then our eyes begin to open to the joyous realization that there is but one God and universal good,—our good, our brother's good, everybody's good, impartial, universal, impersonal. We begin to comprehend that whatsoever is not our brother's good is not our good, and vice versa. Also that there is but one Love, which is reflected in our love, our brother's love, everybody's love,—divine, unchanging, never failing; but one Mind, and that we may all be equally guided, protected, and governed by the same divine unerring Mind, may all desire, think, and act in loving unity and accord. Those who are awakening, like St. John, begin to see about them a glorious "new heaven and a new earth." in place of the old-time struggle and strife, and life takes on new inspiration and activity.
