During the past decade, some members of the medical and clerical professions have found in Christian Science a favorite subject for their oratorical knives, regardless of the fact that in the end the edge of their weapons might be turned. One curious thing, however, in connection with their intellectual efforts, is this, that the two professions do not agree in a diagnosis of the case. One well-known physician has been heard to say ofttimes, "Christian Science is a beautiful religion, bringing peace and quiet and a sense of harmony quite unexplainable to all who accept its help; but it can't heal, never did, and it is perfect nonsense to claim such a thing." On the other hand, numberous clergymen have said to their friends, "Oh, yes, Christian Science heals sickness. I have known marvelous cases which, have been brought out through its application, but it has not the slightest element of religion in it."

Let me say here, that not all of the clergy or physicians hold these views, for among our friends in this city I call to mind one splendid Christian minister of the orthodox faith, who said in conversation with me, "I know that Christian Science is doing a great amount of good in uplifting and regenerating mankind. I have experienced its beneficence in my own healing; I have learned that true holiness means wholeness. I have a number of people in my church who believe in Christian Science, and I wish there were more of them."

Really there is but one way to test anything, and that is by results. The Master said, "Ye shall know them by their fruits." If Christian Science finds a man at the bottom of the moral ladder,—a total wreck,—and regenerates him into a good Christian, who turns from bad habits to good, becomes sober and industrious, and would scorn to do a mean act, who becomes kind and loving to his family, would it not be fair to assert that Christian Science was a Christian religion, when it wrought such changes? Again, if Christian Science found a man who had wasted years of life in sickness and suffering, after having run the gamut of material remedies with no relief, and it had restored him to perfect health and strength through the understanding of God's power to heal now as of olden times, can it be wrong to assert that Christian Science does heal the sick? There is no disputing of either of these points, for every city and almost every village has its proofs which any sincere investigator can find for himself.
